Dear Abby letter on MPD [19 Jan 2008|03:36pm]

mergle
I thought I'd bring people's attention to a recent Dear Abby column, about a (presumably singlet) man engaged to "a woman who has multiple personality disorder." Link to the particular column here.

Text of column for the link-phobic )

Abby's "splintered personality" comment bothers me (I suppose it's possible there was more in the man's letter that wasn't printed indicating that is actually the nature of the system, but even so it seems rather harsh language to use). At least she seems to be discouraging him from expecting the system can/will eventually integrate.

What. A. Disappointment. [02 Oct 2007|10:25pm]

I download Law & Order: SVU (season 8 premiere) a week ago, and have been dreading to watch the episode. Why? I knew that they would stereotype MPD/DID the way media usually does. This episode was ungodly awful, and serious pissed me off.

One of the actors (Detective Stabler) didn't even believe that she had a problem. They were willing to just have her consult a lawyer, rather than see a psychiatrist to confirm the diagnosis. They are really going to need to do some damage control, at least for me personally to like some of the actors again. I never was a huge fan of Novak or Stabler, though. Something still compels me to watch it, and I always catch the re-runs on TNT.

I guess you can't expect much from a crime show, huh?

I have the episode uploaded online if anyone wants the link, let me know in a comment.

Anime series [28 Apr 2007|09:38pm]

(Er, hello, all... I'm new here. ^_^;)

I've been watching the first season of an anime called Saiunkoku Monogatari ("Tale of Saiunkoku"), which in most respects I think is an excellent series. But it dabbles a bit with multiplicity, and unfortunately it doesn't handle it very well.

I finally finished reading the manga Othello. The main character is a multiple, but I don't want to give too much away... just that it's an awesome series, and I/we think Yaya's "split personality" was done very well, especially at the end. It started out like a traditional trauma-model sterotype - Yaya has no knowledge of Nana, gaps in memory, etc. But, it doesn't stay that way... Also, even though Nana tries to deny it for her own reasons, it's clear to the other characters that they're two completely different people who just happen to share a body.

So, I highly recommend it for anyone who likes manga and/or graphic novels. The ending did seem a little bit rushed, but enough was done well to make up for that.

"Dual personalitys." [28 Feb 2007|02:46am]

I was over at [info]ohnotheydidnt and it appears that Lindsay Lohan will be starring in a new film, I Know Who Killed Me.

Shorter version: A young woman appears to suffer from dual personalities after surviving a brutal kidnapping.

The script revolves around Aubrey Fleming (Lohan), a young woman who is rescued after being abducted and tortured by a serial killer. When Fleming returns home, she claims to be someone else, raising questions as to whether she is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder or if something more sinister is going on.

Her character is an exotic dancer, btw.

Opinions? I sort of want to see it and am curious as to how it turns out. Already looks like a stereotype film, though.

what would be worse [09 Feb 2007|08:35pm]

in my mangled trainwreck of thought and what not, I wonder.

wich would be more offensive, media with multiples as they are steriotyped, or media with multiples like I assume I run into on the internet.

Insted of the movie with the woman who has archyotypes running in her head, what about one with "the dragon" "Lisa Simpson from The Simpsons", "the immortal elven poet" "the psychic telopath crystal child" and of course classics like "the 2 year old who speeks and acts like a two year old" and "the super intellegent one" and "the artist with skills that the host/body/main/core/others don't have and never learnt but when they take frount they can compose music even thouh the rest never took a class before".

so yes, would it be more offensive with the 'traditional modle" or the mixed bag of toster powers, otherkins, fictionkins, historcial reincarnares, super brains and renisaance men?

of course the best would be 'the truth', but with what seems to be so many modles, how can we? and for entertainment its better to have a psycopathic murderuess 17 year old nynpho as a system member than 12 confussed silly faeries right?

Movie. [28 Jan 2007|02:29am]

redhotpeppers
[ mood | scared ]

Movie: Session 9
Genre: Horror
System: 4
Called: DID. Which is an error in the film I think because these recordings are supposed to be really old.
Stereotypes: Pretty much everything you can think of. This film depicts the worse stereotype IMO. It's set in Denver State Hospital and it's really pissing me off how they make it seem so horrific. I can't really speak personally for the multiple personalities thing, but as far as hospitals they really weren't that bad. At least not nearly insane like this "movie" creates in such a fake way too. I'm not condoning psychiatric hospitals, because they've done plenty of damage to me, but this is probably the reason so many with mental illness refuse treatment. I'll shut up now.
Lost time: Yes

Other comments: This movie is scaring the crap outta me, so I mute it on the really scary parts, ha ha.

When I finish the movie I'll probably add more (bad) commentary.

They showed a picture of Mary (MPD person) and they made her look like a crossover from junkie & psychotic. Being it's horror and mystery, there are a few twists to the ending that would alter my answers above. Unfortunately, I can't answer them without devouring a main part of the film, which isn't that hard to figure out anyway.

Overall, just another I'm-gonna-kill-you-multiples-from-trauma film.

Heroes [28 Dec 2006|11:05pm]

redhotpeppers
TV Show: Heroes
System: 2
Called: They haven't really gone into detail, but I'm pretty sure they are gonna say 'split personality'.
I'd consider it negative because the other girl, Jessica, is pretty violent. She is also trauma-based.
Stereotypes: Pretty much the basic stereotype.. the angry one who was created through the father's physical abuse.
Lost time: Yes, Nikki ("host") didn't realize she had another personality until she ended up killing the people who were about to take advantage of her and whatnot. She'd look in the mirror and see someone else moving around like putting fingers up to her mouth and saying to be quiet.
Not faking.
No twists.

edit: Niki/Jessica are in jail now and they are planning to integrate Jess into Niki.

Plurality In The Media [09 Oct 2006|05:22pm]

Hello all. We have been a member for a while and have been avidly watching for plural portrayals on the media I watch and/or listen to. I have found one, although I am not sure yet of it's nature. We happened to catchNBC's new show "Help Me help Yu" about a therapist who is sort of a loser and his clients. Something about multiple personalities was mentioned but we haven't seen it yet... When we do we'll post back. If it's bad, we'll write to NBC ourselves.

Bad publicity, redux. [03 Mar 2006|08:09pm]

Reposted from our comment on [info]multiplicity-- they're doing a remake of Sybil. >_<

"ARG!
A made-for-tv remake of "Sybil" is being planned:

http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/entertainment/television/13664957.htm

I utterly hate that movie. Isn't it bad enough that three decades of psychology students have been trained on this crap, believing it's an accurate depiction of multiplicity? It wasn't even accurate to the book (even though the book was also trussed-up to make everything more dramatic) and yet people buy into the Sybil image so completely that they come away convinced they can always 'spot the real ones,' because we obviously must be publically falling to pieces all the time just like Sally Field did; and therefore, anyone who doesn't act just like her is a fake.

Why on earth would anyone think it was necessary to remake it? It sounds to me like it's probably going to end up being just a vehicle for some actress (probably to make Tammy Blanchard more famous). Then again, so was the original movie-- it was practically created just to win an Emmy for Sally Field.

"One Life to Live" redux [26 Oct 2005|04:56pm]

ksol1460
[ mood | dorky ]

[info]jadedmosaic^Shelby writes:

Where we work is a Emergency Room and off our assessment area is a TV waiting room. Well, everyone kept talking about finding out what happens to Jessie on "One Life To Live "

I guess for years there was an actress who played Viki with her "alters" Niki and then maybe others. Since Viki is supposed to have classical MPD/DID, the actress won many Emmys and soap opera awards for her "accurate portrayal of a multiple" and "bringing public awareness to the "disorder".

The whole plot has changed to now-integrated Viki Buchanan's daughter Jessie or Jessica -- who now has a alter named Tess. (It's on at 2pm eastern time on ABC.) Viki is trying to convince everyone, including Jessica's husband, that indeed her daughter is "insane now", and in a fight for her life -- making statements like "You have no idea what an alter will do in order to continue living!" She describes the core as living in a black pit of nothing and seeing the hand of the alter reaching in to help her and pull her out -- that they need each other to live, merge and integrate.

I finally peeked my head out to see a bunch of clients standing around staring at the TV in suspense as "Tess" is confronted with really being Jessica and not "a real person" -- Of course Tess pulls a gun on a complete Police Dept., and it ends there for now.

I went into my office, shut the door, and wanted to bash my head on my desk. This plot carried One Life To Live through the 80s, and it is back again in Viki's daughter. The "split personality" plot and the the character of Niki, "the evil Viki", began in the 70's, but back then they did not hang all the MPD/DID baggage onto it.

Dealing With the Nightmare of Containing Multitudes )

The good thing about it is, now that this award-winning scholar, professor, familiar face on the MacNeil-Lehrer News Hour is out of the closet, the next step might be for the next prestigious dude to be out plural and *not* fractured, nightmarish, in need of therapy & integration, etc. -- someone who can tell the public what being a healthy multiple is like.

Letters to the editor, including both email and postal, info here:

Postal mail is probably still more effective. (But don't go too postal.. :) see http://www.karitas.net/pavilion/armory/contactinfo2.html (scroll down))

Hey I'm just droping by to ask if the movie "all of me" to some extent counts, Gollum and Yugi/Yami Yugi have been broght up, because there are two-in-one it must mean, automaticly that they are "plural"

has anyone seen it? I can'r really recall who was in it, i'm bad at that.

anway this woman is like dying and stuff, she has some shamans and what not, and she was suppose to be transferd to a horse or a rich healthy woman who i think was going to go the horse, they put her soul on some bucket thing and it wound up flying out a window and hits the male main character of the film. he comes to after being clunked in the head with the metal pot and some woman starts talking to him in his head. she isn't to happy about it.

the movie is in part a story of working togehter and comprimise and sacrfice, it has some "grose out" momments like her having to deal with him peeing, they also need to work together to walk, to eat I think they guy even gets a date and she has to cope with that.

so I don't know if it counts, they talk to eachother in their head/out loud, at the end of the movie she gets her new body and stuff.

so yeah, does it count?
