[06 Mar 2007|07:19pm]

I finally finished reading the manga Othello. The main character is a multiple, but I don't want to give too much away... just that it's an awesome series, and I/we think Yaya's "split personality" was done very well, especially at the end. It started out like a traditional trauma-model sterotype - Yaya has no knowledge of Nana, gaps in memory, etc. But, it doesn't stay that way... Also, even though Nana tries to deny it for her own reasons, it's clear to the other characters that they're two completely different people who just happen to share a body.

So, I highly recommend it for anyone who likes manga and/or graphic novels. The ending did seem a little bit rushed, but enough was done well to make up for that.

what would be worse [09 Feb 2007|08:35pm]

in my mangled trainwreck of thought and what not, I wonder.

wich would be more offensive, media with multiples as they are steriotyped, or media with multiples like I assume I run into on the internet.

Insted of the movie with the woman who has archyotypes running in her head, what about one with "the dragon" "Lisa Simpson from The Simpsons", "the immortal elven poet" "the psychic telopath crystal child" and of course classics like "the 2 year old who speeks and acts like a two year old" and "the super intellegent one" and "the artist with skills that the host/body/main/core/others don't have and never learnt but when they take frount they can compose music even thouh the rest never took a class before".

so yes, would it be more offensive with the 'traditional modle" or the mixed bag of toster powers, otherkins, fictionkins, historcial reincarnares, super brains and renisaance men?

of course the best would be 'the truth', but with what seems to be so many modles, how can we? and for entertainment its better to have a psycopathic murderuess 17 year old nynpho as a system member than 12 confussed silly faeries right?

Plurality In The Media [09 Oct 2006|05:22pm]

[ mood | awake ]

Hello all. We have been a member for a while and have been avidly watching for plural portrayals on the media I watch and/or listen to. I have found one, although I am not sure yet of it's nature. We happened to catchNBC's new show "Help Me help Yu" about a therapist who is sort of a loser and his clients. Something about multiple personalities was mentioned but we haven't seen it yet... When we do we'll post back. If it's bad, we'll write to NBC ourselves.

What do you feel constitutes the line between the sensitive depiction of an extreme case and straight-up stereotyping?

Bad publicity, redux. [03 Mar 2006|08:09pm]

Reposted from our comment on multiplicity-- they're doing a remake of Sybil. >_<

A made-for-tv remake of "Sybil" is being planned:

I utterly hate that movie. Isn't it bad enough that three decades of psychology students have been trained on this crap, believing it's an accurate depiction of multiplicity? It wasn't even accurate to the book (even though the book was also trussed-up to make everything more dramatic) and yet people buy into the Sybil image so completely that they come away convinced they can always 'spot the real ones,' because we obviously must be publically falling to pieces all the time just like Sally Field did; and therefore, anyone who doesn't act just like her is a fake.

Why on earth would anyone think it was necessary to remake it? It sounds to me like it's probably going to end up being just a vehicle for some actress (probably to make Tammy Blanchard more famous). Then again, so was the original movie-- it was practically created just to win an Emmy for Sally Field.

Testing,.. [02 Mar 2006|10:11pm]

Anybody here? *taps mic* There's been some talk lately of getting this community more active. I figured I might as well test the waters, to see who's out there.

"One Life to Live" redux [26 Oct 2005|04:56pm]

[ mood | dorky ]

jadedmosaic^Shelby writes:

Where we work is a Emergency Room and off our assessment area is a TV waiting room. Well, everyone kept talking about finding out what happens to Jessie on "One Life To Live "

I guess for years there was an actress who played Viki with her "alters" Niki and then maybe others. Since Viki is supposed to have classical MPD/DID, the actress won many Emmys and soap opera awards for her "accurate portrayal of a multiple" and "bringing public awareness to the "disorder".

The whole plot has changed to now-integrated Viki Buchanan's daughter Jessie or Jessica -- who now has a alter named Tess. (It's on at 2pm eastern time on ABC.) Viki is trying to convince everyone, including Jessica's husband, that indeed her daughter is "insane now", and in a fight for her life -- making statements like "You have no idea what an alter will do in order to continue living!" She describes the core as living in a black pit of nothing and seeing the hand of the alter reaching in to help her and pull her out -- that they need each other to live, merge and integrate.

I finally peeked my head out to see a bunch of clients standing around staring at the TV in suspense as "Tess" is confronted with really being Jessica and not "a real person" -- Of course Tess pulls a gun on a complete Police Dept., and it ends there for now.

I went into my office, shut the door, and wanted to bash my head on my desk. This plot carried One Life To Live through the 80s, and it is back again in Viki's daughter. The "split personality" plot and the the character of Niki, "the evil Viki", began in the 70's, but back then they did not hang all the MPD/DID baggage onto it.

New York Times: Interview with Mr. Fractured Mind [01 Oct 2005|02:45pm]

[ mood | busy ]

Dealing With the Nightmare of Containing MultitudesCollapse )

The good thing about it is, now that this award-winning scholar, professor, familiar face on the MacNeil-Lehrer News Hour is out of the closet, the next step might be for the next prestigious dude to be out plural and *not* fractured, nightmarish, in need of therapy & integration, etc. -- someone who can tell the public what being a healthy multiple is like.

Letters to the editor, including both email and postal, info here:

Postal mail is probably still more effective. (But don't go too postal.. :) see http://www.karitas.net/pavilion/armory/contactinfo2.html (scroll down))

fly by posting [02 Sep 2005|10:05pm]

Hey I'm just droping by to ask if the movie "all of me" to some extent counts, Gollum and Yugi/Yami Yugi have been broght up, because there are two-in-one it must mean, automaticly that they are "plural"

has anyone seen it? I can'r really recall who was in it, i'm bad at that.

anway this woman is like dying and stuff, she has some shamans and what not, and she was suppose to be transferd to a horse or a rich healthy woman who i think was going to go the horse, they put her soul on some bucket thing and it wound up flying out a window and hits the male main character of the film. he comes to after being clunked in the head with the metal pot and some woman starts talking to him in his head. she isn't to happy about it.

the movie is in part a story of working togehter and comprimise and sacrfice, it has some "grose out" momments like her having to deal with him peeing, they also need to work together to walk, to eat I think they guy even gets a date and she has to cope with that.

so I don't know if it counts, they talk to eachother in their head/out loud, at the end of the movie she gets her new body and stuff.

so yeah, does it count?

"Paranoia Agent" and the last 2 episodes of "Inu Yasha" [11 Jul 2005|08:20pm]

A couple of weeks ago this episode came up on the series "Paranoia Agent". On all the episodes of this series there's always a different story going on, though they're all linked through these two detectives trying to solve the case of assaults in the city, attributed to someone they call "Little Slugger". That's just the thread that links the episodes. The episodes themselves are different from one another and often bizarre, so you don't really know what's going on for at least a good 10 minutes.Harumi ChonoCollapse )

Then there are the last two episodes of Inu Yasha, involving a character named Suikotsu. Suikotsu belongs to a band of mercenaries called the "Band of Seven" and has been resurrected along with the other seven by witchcraft with the help of Shikon jewel shards. (The Shikon jewel is the [magic, but cursed] Jewel of the Four Souls, shattered early on in the series by Kagome, which grants power to the bearer and is said to become more beautiful when tainted by an impure soul.) They have been resurrected by Naraku, a half-demon made of a human and many other demons he allowed into his body, and given the job of killing Inu Yasha, another half-demon (half dog-demon). By this point in the story, at least three of the Band of Seven have been killed, most of them not by Inu Yasha's party, and one of them has been almost killed and left for dead by Inu Yasha and remade. I think the members we've met so far have been Jakotsu, Rinkotsu, Ginkotsu, probably Mukotsu and now Suikotsu. Interesting side note; Jakotsu is a male crossdresser with a crush on Inu Yasha, voiced in the English version by a female voice actress.not a positive renderingCollapse )

Multiplicity Book Report Numero Uno [09 Jul 2005|04:26pm]
I'm not sure if I mentioned it on this comm or on the other one, but I've somehow managed to acquire a "multiplicity in the media" perseveration, so I've got a rather large reading list accumulated of books which touch on the subject- a lot of which I haven't seen mentioned on Pavillion, Astraea's site, or elsewhere... and the fact that some of them are library books has kind of pushed me now into overcoming my normal shyness and making a post. If I'm doing something wrong, let me know so that this post can be fixed or deleted or something. The books I grabbed on this run ranged from fairly awful to VERY good.

Note: The following reviews are fairly complete and so can and WILL contain spoilers.

Barely there- The WatchmenCollapse )

Much ado about medians- Penny DreadfulCollapse )

READ THIS BOOK- Dark MoonCollapse )

Edit- cleaned up typos and added LJ-cuts for ease of reading. Sorry about that. ^^;;;;

The Ring 0: Birthday [22 Jun 2005|07:31pm]

[ mood | busy ]

I bought The Ring 0: Birthday for a fellow system member today, since I was lucky enough to manage a ride out of suburbia and into Saratoga. Since I like to read what I spend my money on, and it's a fairly thin single-volume self-contained graphic novel, I read it myself. Multiplicity is never directly stated, but I got the vibe anyway due to a lot of things, and so I figured a write-up for this place would be appropriate.

First, the publication information.Collapse )

Plot summary. Contains blatant spoilers for the Japanese version of the Ring movie.Collapse )

Anyway, typical gothic good/evil split. Took too much time on the plot synopsis to write any analysis. (Plus, I was interrupted by a long phone conversation somehwere in the middle.)

[17 Jun 2005|12:58am]

From ricktboy:

"I was watching TV tonight, and I saw the new Wendy's commercial. It's a complete insult to the multiplicity community.

"Wendy's will run ads later this month showing a customer afflicted with a fictitious disease called MEPS (Multiple Eating Personality Syndrome). There's so much food, he doesn't know which to choose. If the ad is successful, it'll be followed by a campaign touting real diseases. One of the slogans: "Our restaurants are on major highways because we promote clogged arteries."

"I can't find a downloadable of the commercial, but it really insulted us...

"I for five, lol, are planning on boycotting wendy's.

"The commercial featured a guy ordering a combo...when the chick behind the counter asks him which side he wants, he says "fries". simple enough, right? wrong. then a very deep voice comes out of his mouth, as he dramatically cocks his head to one side and says "baked potato". another voice, this one more feminine, says "caesar salad"...and then the voice over comes in, talking about MEPS...Multiple Eating Personality Syndrome...I think it's bullshit...there are those in this system who are rather touchy about being part of a multiple system, and this was just downright rude...

"we're seriously going to give them pieces of our minds, and y'all should too...

Yuu Yuu Hakusho: Sensui [02 Jan 2005|12:43am]

It's been a really long time since I posted here...I thought I told you all about Yuu Yuu Hakusho already, but it seems I haven't.

I didn't read over the whole list of helpful terms in the preceding posts, so I'll just try and make it right now as best I can.

Earlier tonight on Cartoon Network (US version) they showed an episode of Yuu Yuu Hakusho where they explained that the former Spirit Detective, Sensui, had split into seven distinct personalities. spoilersCollapse )

Of course...then there is Kurama/Youko Kurama, also. In the earlier tournament (it might be the Ankoku Bujuutsukai but I might be drawing that from Dragonball) the character "Kurama" aka Shuuichi Minamino was exposed to vapor from something called "Fruit of Past Life" which was supposed to turn him into a baby and make him easy to kill. Instead, it regressed him back to his former self as a cruel fox spirit by the name of Youko Kurama.more spoilersCollapse )

relataed to scizopheria?!!! [18 Dec 2004|12:00pm]

[ mood | annoyed ]

i was like half watching chaneel 4 news (uk) last night and there was a round up of silly science stuff and they said the BMJ had diagnosed Gollum as scizophenic (which they said was silly becos he's like a story) which we think is maybe fair enuff becos he is like pyscotic as well as plural and lots of (uk) doctors use scizopherina as like short hand for all psycotic illnesses and then said there was debate among Tolkien fans about whether he was scizopheric or had "related multiple personality disoder"!!!. I was so cross. (but after that there was a very cool chrocheted fractal thingy so i got a bit less cross)
